Saudi Arabia have chosen a dangerous path by severing ties with Iran, a top Islamic Politics professor has told Tony Jones.

The move follows the execution a prominent Shiite cleric and 46 other prisoners accused of terrorism.

The decision has been labelled as a dangerous one as tensions between the two countries, who have long been at odds with one another, continue to escalate.

Iran has been given 48 hours to recall its ambassadors and diplomats from Saudi Arabia.

Greg Barton, Professor of Global Islamic Politics at Deakin University, told 3AW Mornings that Saudi Arabia must be careful as they continue to make enemies.

Listen below for Professor Barton’s full analysis
