Jazz superstar Dave Koz is in town for his first trip to Melbourne.

He told Denis Walter he’s happy to be in Melbourne for racing season, and to get a break from the US election.

Koz was 13 when he took up the saxophone – and it was the first instrument that felt ‘real and right’ when he held it.

‘There’s a palpable feeling when you have an audience that is there to enjoy themselves they trust you, they want you to take them on a journey,’ he said.

‘I love playing the saxophone. I love being able to utilise that instrument as a vehicle for expression.

‘It’s such an emotional instrument.’

Koz is playing at Bird’s Basement until November 6, tickets at birdsbasement.com
