‘This is more than a scam, it is an attempt at extortion.’

3AW Mornings has been inundated with calls and emails from listeners, receiving threatening automated voicemail messages from a woman claiming to be from the ATO.

Neil Mitchell played the voicemail on air and said the brazen scam targeted vulnerable people and was frightening.

Consumer Affairs Minister Jane Garrett implored Victorians not to respond to any demands.

‘It is a scam, don’t pay it,’ she said.

‘Government agencies do not act in that matter.

‘Hang up the phone and call the authorities.’
