New South Wales Governor David Hurley will be Australia’s next Governor-General.

Mr Hurley will replace Sir Peter Cosgrove when he retires in from the role in March.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison made the announcement on Sunday morning.

“I had only one choice, my first choice, and he is standing next to me,” Mr Morrison said.

Mr Hurley served in the Australian Army for 42 years, including three years as the chief of the Australian Defence Force.

His honours include the Distinguished Service Cross for his leadership during Operation SOLACE in Somalia in 1993, and a Companion within the Order of Australia in 2010 for eminent service to the army.
