Australia could charge immigrants a fee of roughly $30,000 to become a permanent resident, under a radical proposal.

Senator David Leyonhjelm, from the Liberal Democrats Party, has proposed immigration places be sold as a way of rationing our migrant intake.

‘Our view is that having bureaucrats decide how many hairdressers and motor mechanics and brain surgeons we need, is not necessarily the way you get the best outcome,’ he told Tom Elliott.

‘The best way to do it would be to charge the people who think they might want to come to Australia a fee, not allow them to have welfare for some time after they arrive. So therefore they make an economic decision.’

The productivity commission said it could raise $7.5 billion but Senator Leyonhjelm admitted they had reservations about the proposal.
