An Amtrak train making the first-ever run along a faster new route in the US has hurtled off an overpass south of Seattle, killing at least six people.

About 77 passengers and five crew members were aboard when the train derailed.

At least 50 people were hospitalised. More than a dozen with critical or serious injuries.

KING5 Seattle reporter Alex Rozier, who was on the train only 10 minutes before it crashed, told Tony Jones he was lucky he got off moments before chaos unfolded.

“The car that I was in is well off the tracks and onto the freeway,” he said.
