Severe and extreme fire conditions predicted in Victoria on Tuesday

Tom Elliott

It’s barely October, but fire fighters across the state are already on edge.

The CFA is expecting ‘classic’ fire weather on Tuesday, with temperatures soaring into the mid 30s.

CFA State Duty Officer Gary Weir told Neil Mitchell extreme fire conditions were predicted for North Central Victoria tomorrow, with severe conditions in the Mallee and Central District.

‘It’s classic fire weather,’ Mr Weir said on 3AW Mornings.

‘And with very little rain over the last three weeks, those areas ? especially with winds predicted to gust up to 130 kilometres ? are causing us a fair bit of concern tomorrow.’

Mr Weir, who has been in the job 28 years, said he could not remember conditions ever being so bad, this far out from summer.

‘The fire danger seasons are getting longer,’ he conceded.
