Shadow immigration minister’s ‘deep concern’ as MCG bomb plot terrorist released
Australia’s shadow minister for immigration and citizenship says he has “deep concern” over the deterioration of Australia’s national security environment in recent months, and he fears that wasn’t taken into consideration when the decision to allow convicted terrorist Abdul Nacer Benbrika to be released into the community on a strict one-year extended supervision order was made.
Shadow minister for immigration, Dan Tehan, told 3AW’s Heidi Murphy it’s unclear if the Attorney-General and Prime Minister deliberately decided not to apply for a continuing detention order for Benbrika, or if it was an oversight.
Benbrika is set to walk free from jail this afternoon after sending 18 years behind bars for planning an attack on the MCG on grand final day, as well as attacks on the rail network and Crown Casino.
