Should Victoria implement double demerit points for the holiday period?
Victoria is considering implementing double demerit points for driving offences over the holiday period.
NSW has the system in place, and Nick McCallum thinks it’s the ‘circuit-breaker’ we need to lower the road toll here.
But Samantha Cockfield from the TAC doesn’t think it’s the best idea.
The Road Safety Manager said Victoria’s penalty regime is already ‘highly-effective’.
‘On the whole we’d say that there’s no good evidence that (doubling demerit points) works to actually reduce road trauma,’ Ms Cockburn said on Tuesday.
Ms Cockfield said she would prefer to improve road infrastructure and car safety instead.
