The wild weather has eased but showers are expected for the Melbourne Cup Parade.

Bayside areas were the worst hit in the metropolitan region, as a cold front swept across the state.

Wind gusts in excess of 100km/h at South Channel Island, 96km/h at Fawkner beacon.

Alpine areas were hit with 120km/h winds.

Trees have come down over roads and onto homes and powerlines

One thousand properties in Gippsland are without power.

There’s good news and bad news for those heading to the Melbourne Cup parade at midday, Richard Carlyon from the weather bureau says those wild winds have eased but showers are likely.

Past racing greats Might and Power, Brew and Rogan Josh will feature in today’s Melbourne Cup Parade in the CBD.

The parade will make its way down Swanston Street to Federation Square from midday.
