Simon Lethlean responds to criticism of the ‘insufficient intent’ interpretation

Sportsday

AFL footy boss Simon Lethlean says the deliberate out-of-bounds rule is improving the game.

Lethlean told 3AW Sunday Football the style of football has improved since tightening the rule.

The rule was thrust into the spotlight again when Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge compared the officiating with British comedy show Fawlty Towers.

But Lethlean said it’s a good rule.

‘The players are aware now that they have to do everything they can to keep the ball from going out,’ Lethlean said.

‘I think that’s making for a more attacking style of football.’

He responded to Beveridge’s comment as ‘a moment of levity’.
