Ben Dean has been found alive.

The six-year-old, who went missing near Beechworth around 5pm on Wednesday, was located almost a kilometre from home just after 11am on Thursday.

There had been grave concerns for his welfare, given the boy has Down syndrome.

But he is remarkably safe and well.

‘Aside from losing his new boots and being a little cold, he is none the worse for his ordeal,’ Ben’s family said in a statement.

‘Our family would like to thank everyone for their support and time in helping to find Ben.’

Superintendent Paul O’Halloran spoke to Neil Mitchell from the scene once Ben was found.

‘Everyone is doing high-fives, I’ll tell ya,’ he said.

‘He’s being assessed, but from all accounts he is OK.’
