‘Sky train’ mooted for Cranbourne-Pakenham line
The Transport Minister says a ‘sky train’ along parts of the busy Cranbourne-Pakenham line just one of many plans the government is considering as part of its commitment to remove 50 dangerous level crossings.
Designs have been submitted to the Andrews Government to elevate tracks and stations, clearing the way for land underneath to be used for parks, car parks or shops.
The Opposition has condemned the idea, saying it would ‘split communities in half’.
But Jacinta Allan says ‘sky rail’ is just one of many concepts on the table.
‘As as part of removing every level crossing between Dandenong and the cty, we are getting the best of advice from experienced construction and engineering firms,’ she said.
‘As the tender process is underway, no final decision has been made.’
But the Opposition MP David Davis says Victorians will not be impressed.
‘Nobody wants the massive deafening noise of a train in the air, with railway noise rumbling for kilometres in either direction,’ he said.
‘And nobody wants the wasteland area underneath, tumbleweeds rolling.’
