‘Smart drugs’ may be making people dumber
Taking medication intended for people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder to sharpen cognitive function may not have the effect many people think it does.
A new study by the Cente for Brain, Mind and Markets at Melbourne University found taking the medication “created a lot of random activity” in people who don’t have ADHD.
The study found people without ADHD who took so-called ‘smart drugs’ took 50 per cent longer to complete a complex task, and their solutions weren’t as good as those who didn’t take the medication.
