Some Victorians expected to take glass rubbish to drop-off recycling points

Some Victorians will be expected to drop their glass recycling off at designated drop-off points when the state’s new recycling system is rolled out later this year.

Many households will receive a fourth bin — with a purple lid — for glass recycling.

But residents in Port Phillip Council, as well as some residents in apartment complexes in other councils, will be forced to rely on public drop-off points for glass.

Others have raised concerns over a lack of space to store a fourth bin.

CEO of Victoria’s Waste Management Association, Peter Anderson, says separating glass from other recycling will reduce the amount of recycling that’s contaminated and diverted to landfill.

“We have nearly 30 per cent of all waste collected that goes back into landfill only because of contamination, and this will help us to better define what needs to be recycled, and reused, and repurposed,” he told Neil Mitchell.
