The start of spring is expected to bring the worst hay fever season in 15 years for Melburnians.

The pollen count is up to its highest levels since the wet winter of 2011.

Melbourne University Associate Professor Edward Newbigin said it’s flowers that you might not expect that are the real villains this spring season.

‘We do a pollen count every year, and we are doing it now, on an irregular basic over the next few weeks,’ he said.

He also runs the forecast website, melbourne.pollen.com.au, to keep Melburnians up to date with the daily pollen count.
