With the 2018 prize now in a 3AW Breakfast listener’s driveway, the 2019 edition of the Rumour File started this morning.

And Steve Quartermain started it with a top-shelf tale.

Filling in with Kate Stevenson while Ross and John take a break, ‘Quarters’ told us about a Melburnian who evidently didn’t know his Bordeaux from a claret.

“A man moved into a family home passed on through the generations,” he said.

“He decides to cook a spaghetti bolognese … and in doing so uses a bottle of wine from his inherited wine cellar.”

It was delicious bolognese, as it should be, because the man had used a bottle of 1953 Penfolds Grange.

He recognised the brand the next day and took the five remaining bottles to a wine expert to ask whether the bottles were important.

The expert told him the bottles were among only 3000 bottles in only the second batch of Grange commercially released.

The folk at Dan Murphy’s later told 3AW Breakfast the bottles retail at between $35,000 and $40,000 each.
