Staff at the Royal Melbourne Hospital have been left traumatised after a man allegedly held a nurse hostage

Staff at the Royal Melbourne Hospital have been left traumatised after a man allegedly armed with a knife held a nurse hostage. 

3AW Drive was alerted to the incident after receiving an email from a hospital employee which detailed the event.

The employee said armed police were called to a surgery ward on Monday night after a nurse was allegedly held against her will in a toilet for a period of time, but escaped uninjured. 

The alleged offender remains under police guard in hospital and is yet to be charged.

The Royal Melbourne Hospital said debriefing support was provided to the staff involved.
