TREK TALK: The director and cast of the new Star Trek say that, even with mega?budget franchise films, story must come first.

The latest Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond, finds Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) suffering from self-doubt as the Enterprise heads out on an adventure that pits the crew against a ruthless enemy.

The 13th in the series ?beginning with Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1980) ? the film contains all the requisite action and visual effect sequences that have now become standard for multiplex blockbusters.

Yet the film, written by Doug Jung and Simon Pegg (who plays engineer Scotty), is careful to keep its story grounded by the characters who have been central to the Star Trek legacy since it began exactly 50 years ago as the classic TV series.

During their promotional visit to Australia, director Justin Lin (he made Fast & Furious 3,4,5 & 6) and actors Chris Pine (Captain Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Mr Spock), Karl Urban (Dr ‘Bones’ McCoy) and John Cho (Sulu) spoke to us about the new Trek adventure and the franchise film culture in which we live.

Director Justin Lin also addresses the loss of Anton Yelchin (Chekov), who died in a car accident on 19 June.
