State government e-scooter trial announcement sparks debate
The state government has announced their plans to extend their e-scooter trial for another six months, but it’s drawn some criticism.
Acting executive officer of Victoria Walks, Duane Burt, says the decision was very ‘disappointing’.
“They’re acknowledging that there are problems, and saying they’ll make changes, but they’re not actually making any at this point,” he said.

Founder of Zipidi, a consultancy group on transport matters, Stephen Coulter, has shared his thoughts on the announcement, denying e-scooter companies are “cherry picking” data.
He says usage data is being collected and each ride provides “80 bits of data per second”.
“It goes through independent platforms to a global data standard,” he said.
He also says the use of e-scooters has already led to a decrease in traffic.
