The Andrews government is today issuing a desperate plea for retired teachers to return to classrooms.

There are 40,000 registered teachers across the state who aren’t currently working in schools.

Across the state, there are currently 1700 teaching vacancies, with Melbourne’s west suffering the most severe teacher shortage.

President of the Australian Primary Principals Association, Malcolm Elliott, says it’s a “crisis” and asking retired teachers to return is “not going to solve the problem”.

“We have to understand how important teaching is to the future of Victoria,” he told Shane McInnes, filling in for Neil Mitchell.
