Sam Newman has hit back at any suggestion Rebecca Maddern’s appointment on The Footy Show panel is a ‘token’ gesture.

The former Seven Network presenter has joined Channel 9 and will sit alongside the likes of Newman on the weekly panel.

While most of the feedback has been positive so far, some have questioned whether Maddern’s selection was a ‘politically correct’ choice.

‘That’s a bit insulting to Rebecca,’ Newman told Steve Price on 3AW Nights.

‘It’s such a lazy, obvious thing to say.’
