Steve Price has responded to criticism of a comment he made on ABC on Monday night.

Appearing on Q&A, Price said co-panelist Guardian columnist Van Badham was being ‘hysterical’.

The comment has caused an uproar and many took it as misogynistic due to its historical context.

But Price told Tom Elliott there was no implicit meaning to that effect.

‘I don’t think that this is something I need to defend myself about,’ he said.

‘There was a person sitting next to me who became hysterical. If I see something, I’ll name it.’

Price said he doesn’t think the ABC is honest about its aim for the show.

‘They want ratings, they want controversy,’ he said.

‘I understand why the ABC sat me next to her.’
