Stinking Melbourne subway wreaking havoc for arcade businesses
An extremely unpleasant smell has been wafting through one of Melbourne’s most historic subways.
The subway takes pedestrians from Degraves Street to Flinders street and has wreaked havoc this week with shop owners forced to close up early due to the horrendous smell.
Store owner, Christopher Bril, described the sewage smell in a Melbourne CBD arcade as ‘the worst smell in the history of the world’.
The stench has been wafting through Campbell Arcade, shop owner Christopher Bril, from Corky St Clair told 3AW Breakfast the smell has plagued the arcade since Monday afternoon.
The cause has not been determined but the City of Melbourne says its not sewage.
‘They’re not sure and they told us it wasn’t sewage, but it smells like nothing but sewage,’ Mr Bril said.
The smell has been forcing people to cover their faces to get through the arcade as quickly as possible.
‘I’ve had to leave because I couldn’t handle the smell anymore,’ Mr Bril continued.
Engineers, plumbers and council workers have been on scene trying to fix the problem.
