Stunning Travis Head century helps Adelaide pinch remarkable victory over Sixers

Adelaide Strikers captain Brad Hodge has heaped high praise on young gun Travis Head after he blasted a stunning century to lead his side to a memorable victory over the Sydney Sixers.

In front of a crowd of 46,389 at the Adelaide Oval, Head blasted the Strikers to a victory that looked impossible when they needed 56 to win off the last three overs having been set 177 by the Sixers.

But Head belted seven sixes and two boundaries off the next 15 balls to guide the Strikers to a five-wicket win – remarkably with three balls remaining.

Head finished unbeaten on 101 from 53 balls, hitting Sean Abbott for three consecutive sixes to finish off the match in the finakl over of the match.

But the result could have been a lot different had Head not been dropped by sub fielder Charlie Waxim in the 14th over off the bowling of Jackson Bird when he was on 24.

He made the Sixers pay with a career-best innings that featured nine sixes and four boundaries.

Hodge told Macquarie’s Summer of Cricket Head’s knock rates up among the best innings he’s seen played in Twenty20 cricket.

After Craig Simmons (25) and Tim Ludemann (26) got the Strikers’ innings away to a flyer with 46 from the first four overs, some tight bowling by the Sixers looked to have swung the match in their favor.

That’s until Head got hold of them.

Earlier, the Sixers total of 5-176 was set up by Brad Haddin, who scored an unbeaten 54 from 35 balls with four sixes, and former Strikers captain Johan Botha (38 not out off 20 balls).

Their unbroken stand of 71 was a new record sixth wicket partnership for the Sixers. They finished with a flurry, adding 64 off the last five overs.

There was a bit of controversy in the final over when it appeared Haddin had edged a Ben Laughlin delivery through to Tim Ludemann but it was signalled a wide by umpire Simon Fry.

Leg-spinner Adil Rashid was the best of the Strikers’ bowlers, claiming 3-34 from his four overs including the crucial wicket of acting Sixers’ captain Nic Maddinson for a golden duck.
