SUN SMART: Jim Schembri interviews Catching The Sun director Shalini Kantayya

Sun Smart: Interview with director Shalini Kantayya about her confronting solar power documentary Catching the Sun.

When New York director Shalini Kantayya went to China for her documentary Catching the Sun she was truly awed.

In chronicling the development of solar power into an economically sustainable and competitive energy source, Kantayya found that the tentative steps taken by bold initiatives in the United States were being dwarfed by giant strides in China where solar energy is a major priority.

In this spirited and often frank interview via Skype, Kantayya discusses the issues covered by the film and her approach to the topic. She also addresses the broader issue of independence faced by directors, such as Kantayya, who describe themselves as activists. Are the two terms compatible?

Catching the Sun opens the Transitions Film Festival in Melbourne on Thursday 18 February, 7pm Nova. This will be followed by a panel discussion with Shalini Kantayya. Ticket & info: http://tinyurl.com/h8ls2kl
