There’s been an unexpected twist in the battle to keep long-running soap opera Neighbours in production.

The Australian program has been dropped by Channel 5, the UK network which has aired it for more than a decade, putting its future in doubt.

Channel 10 says it’s committed to continuing the program, but it needs to find new backers.

So UK fans of the soap have turned to the program’s original theme song to show their support.

They’ve made the track, sung by Barry Crocker, number one on the UK soundtracks chart and number two on the singles chart.

“That, in fact, has pushed Adele down the pack, so it’s a very bizarre thing!,” entertainment reporter Peter Ford said.

“The fans said ‘Let’s send out a symbol that we still love Neighbours, all go out and download the Neighbours theme song’.”
