A Swedish road safety expert has taught us how to lower the road toll.

Sweden has one of the best road safety records in the world, and Prof Claes Tingvall played a leading role in creating a culture of road safety.

For example, 200 children were killed on the road annually in Sweden 40 years ago.

Last year that number was seven.

Now, Prof Tingvall in Australia to help with the TAC’s ‘Towards Zero’ campaign. 

He told Tom Elliott the road system needs to accept that humans make mistakes.

‘The infrastructure needs to be more forgiving to different kinds of mistakes,’ he said.

‘The only environment we have around us (that isn’t based on human error) is the road transport system.’

He also hinted that Australian drivers could stand to leave a bit more space between cars.
