Taxi drivers will soon no longer be able to turn off their meters and demand cash if they’re hailed from the street or a cab rank.

The Andrews government will slam shut the loophole which saw hundreds of people ripped off during the Australian Open and Grand Prix earlier this year.

Leader of the Victorian Taxi Drivers Union Darren Parker welcomes the change, claiming “we’ve been advocating for this for some time”.

Press PLAY to hear his thoughts on the change set to be introduced

The Herald Sun reports the change was introduced during the deregulation of the taxi industry, but Marion Terrill from the Grattan Institute has told 3AW Breakfast it creates the risk of the passenger being ripped off at the end of the trip.

Press PLAY to hear her explain + Ross’ way around the problem!

The new regulation is expected to come into effect on September 28.
