Former Victorian premier Ted Baillieu says religious groups need to be held to account.

He is backing a proposal that would require all religious leaders to register with the government and agree to keep a code of conduct.

‘I think it’s important that we understand out of both the parliamentary enquiry and royal commission there are significant problems with religious organisations and non-government institutions,’ he said on 3AW Drive.

‘I think everybody now recognises that and we have to deal with it.

‘The first thing to do is make those organisations accountable.

‘They do fantastic work, but in this area they’ve been remiss.’
