UPDATE: Telstra says it will investigate what caused a national outage affecting customers across the country today, the second major outage in a number of weeks.

Phone calls and data were affected this morning, with customers reporting they were unable to use their mobile phones and ‘SOS only’ displayed where 3G or 4G should be.

Group managing director for networks Mike Wright told Tom Elliott it was a fault in the core part of the network.

“We are still getting to the root cause,” he said.

“We do know what started as a fault in the core of the network prevented customers from accessing the 4G layer in the network.”

Services have mostly returned to normal.

“It’s definitely a national outage of some form,” tech expert Trevor Long told Neil Mitchell.

“It could take some time to work out.

“They’d be frantic right now.”
