Telstra has revealed human error was behind Tuesday’s national outage which derailed the mobile phone network.

Kate McKenzie, chief operations officer, told Tom Elliott the issue arose following maintenance on a signal node.

‘Unfortunately the individual did not follow the correct procedures,’ she revealed on 3AW Drive.

‘We’re incredibly disappointed. It’s not OK.

‘We’ll be working with our customers to make up for the inconvenience we caused today.’

She said the issue had since been resolved.

As for the employee in question?

‘I think he’s probably had the worst day of his career,’ Ms McKenzie said.

‘We’ll be doing a thorough investigation.’
