Authorities say at least 10 people are dead and another seven are injured after a gunman opened fire at a college in Oregon, in the US.

The shooter is among the dead after the shooting at Umpqua Community College.

Student Brandon Hubbard was in a building nearby when he and friends heard gunshots and screaming.

‘We ran into our building and told our teacher what was happening and he put our building into lockdown,’ he said on 3AW Mornings.

Brandon told Neil Mitchell he had heard the gunman told the class to get down on the ground and state their religion before he started shooting.

US President Barack Obama has responded with anger to the violence, calling for tougher gun laws.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots.

‘A girl came around the corner and yelled ‘shooter’ and I heard the gunshots, and I knew, so I just ran,’ witness Krys Denino said.
