Tennis Australia boss says it’s ‘really hard to say’ if Djokovic will play at the Australian Open
Tennis Australia says no medical exemptions have yet been granted for the Australian Open.
Novak Djokovic was yesterday included in the event’s main draw entry list, sparking discussions that the world number one, who has not publicly revealed his COVID-19 vaccination status, could receive a medical exemption to play.
Djokovic has not confirmed whether or not he’ll play at the tournament.
Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley says having your name on the main draw entry list does not mean a player will definitely attend.
“It’s an automatic entry list based on your ranking,” he told Tony Jones, filling in for Neil Mitchell.
The list will be finalised on December 28.
Mr Tiley says it’s “really hard” to say if Djokovic will play at the Open, but there’s “no preferential treatment for any tennis player”.
“If he’s vaccinated we need evidence of that.
“If he’s not vaccinated and he has a medical condition he’ll have to go through the medical exemption process … Tennis Australia has nothing to do with determining that.”
