Tom Elliott has concerns Victoria will follow Canberra’s lead and move to decriminalise drugs such as cocaine, heroin and most disturbingly, ice.

The ACT government has moved to pass a bill that will no longer make it a criminal offence to possess small quantities of drugs.

“Marijuana is one thing, but ice? Really?” Tom Elliott asked on 3AW Drive on Thursday.

Tom Elliott said he was concerned it could promote drug use by removing the negative stigma associated with using them.

Dr Nicole Lee, Adjunct Professor at the National Drug Research Institute at Curtin University, said that was the point.

“We know that stigma reduces people’s willingness to seek help,” she said.
