The Baths restaurant in Sorrento goes up in flames
An iconic restaurant and wedding venue in Sorrento has been significantly damaged by fire.
Fire crews arrived at The Baths about 8.15pm last night to find the weatherboard building well alight.
The CFA says the restaurant was closed and no one was injured.
But the popular beach-fronted venue, regularly booked for weddings and events, has suffered significant damage.
Fire investigators will arrive this morning to determine the cause, when the extent of the damage is expected to be made clear.
Point Nepean has been closed in both directions in the area.
CFA Operations Officer Arthur Haynes confirmed the property was completely destroyed.
‘It took about an hour and a half to get the fire under control,’ Mr Haynes said.
Channel 9 reporter Christine Ahern told Ross and John it will be tough for the owners to rebuild.
‘The owners were in Sydney last night when they got the call. They quickly flew back to Melbourne.’
Ms Ahern spoke to the Australian’s Patrick Smith, who lives in the area, who said the fire was ‘wretched for the community.’
