Two-in-three young Australians concede they may never own their own home.

A Nine newspapers survey reveals 67 per cent of young Australians aged between 18 and 34 believe they’ll never own a property in the area in which the currently live.

Professor of urban planning at the University of Sydney, Nicole Gurran, says even apartments are becoming out of reach in many areas.

“All of our policy settings unfortunately seem geared to take us to that place … where there’s a big gap between people who own property wealth and people who rent,” she told Ross and Russel.

“We can see even in the most recent figures, lending to investors easily outpaces lending to first home buyers.

“Unfortunately our rental settings aren’t designed to provide a long-term stable rental situation either.”
