The Bureau of Meteorology doesn’t want to be the BoM anymore
The Bureau of Meteorology no longer wants to be known as the BoM or the weather bureau.
In a move that’s attracted much attention on social media, the BoM requests it’s no longer referred to by its acronym. Instead, it wants to be referred to using its full name in the first instance, and the Bureau thereafter.
“For short you can call it ‘the Bureau’ which I think is probably not a good choice,” Dee Dee said of the change. “There’s a lot of different bureaus in Australia.”

In a statement requesting media organisations update their style guides, the meteorological body said “With an ever-increasing number of severe weather events, it is more crucial than ever that the Bureau of Meteorology’s insights, wisdom, data and information are shared, understood and acted upon”.
“To support this need, the Bureau of Meteorology asks that media outlets update editorial style to ensure references to the organisation are by its full name, the Bureau of Meteorology or the Bureau for short.”
