Some Australians are bringing home huge pay packets without spending years at university, with demand for tradespeople meaning those ending their apprenticeships in some trades such electricians with advanced technical skills, are entering the profession with six-figure incomes.

Director of economics, employment and skills at the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Jenny Lambert, says a university degree isn’t always the best way to rake in the cash, but post-school education remains important.

“It’s very important for people to have a post-secondary qualification and universities can deliver great outcomes, but vocational training can also deliver great outcomes,” she told Stephen Quartermain and Elise Elliott, filling in for Ross and Russel.

“Trade apprenticeships, but also other types of vocational training, particularly those ones that have ways to having your own business, can deliver really good career earning outcomes.

“The ranks of the unemployed are filled much more strongly with people who have no post-school qualifications, and particularly those who didn’t finish school, so we shouldn’t underestimate the value of education, both at school and then post-school.”
