The case for and against Melbourne hosting the Commonwealth Games

He won a gold medal when Melbourne last hosted the Commonwealth Games, but former Australian shooting star Russell Mark is the first to admit the case for hosting the games again in 2026 isn’t overly compelling.

Mark told Neil Mitchell the reality was the Commonwealth Games were a “good little event to warm up” for the Olympics.

“That’s all the Commonwealth Games are these days, as sad as it is to say,” he said on 3AW.

He said it would cost a lot of money to host and it wouldn’t attract overseas visitors or boost local tourism significantly.

“I think there would have to be some very creative accounting going on in the next couple of weeks to justify it,” he said.

But it’s not all bad.

Mark said there were some aspects you couldn’t put a price on.

“You can’t measure how good it is for kids,” he said.

“If it gets kids off their video games and playing sport again, then what price do you put on that?

“Could we spend $2 billion better? Yeah, yeah we could.”
