Smoking and vaping could be banned outside Melbourne’s landmarks and transport hubs, under a council proposal to expand CBD smoke-free zones.

There are already smoking bans in 13 zones across the city, including Bourke Street Mall, Market Street Park, Fulham Place and Collins Way.

If the plan goes ahead, smoking and vaping would be banned outside places such as Town Hall in Swanston Street, community sporting hubs and civic spaces. Entry points for transport hubs could also become smoke-free.

Quit Victoria director Dr Sarah White says smoke-free zones can assist smokers to give up the habit.

“We hear from so many people who are trying to quit that they get triggered by seeing someone smoke or vape in front of them,” she told Ross and Russel.
