The ‘chicken and egg’ problem the ANZ boss says is keeping workers from the office
The boss of one of Australia’s big banks says there’s a “chicken and egg problem” which poses a challenge for getting workers back into the CBD.
ANZ CEO Shayne Elliott says employers have “got to make it fun again” if they want staff to return full-time.
“You end up with this chicken and egg problem … people come and then they’re disappointed. ‘Oh it’s not much fun here, there’s nobody here, the coffee shop is closed, I can’t get the dry cleaning done’,” he told Neil Mitchell.
“I think we need to subsidise some of that stuff and get it going.”
Mr Elliott says ANZ has waived rents for the five coffee shops in its CBD building, and he’s urging other businesses to do the same.
“I think we just have to invest ahead of it,” he said.
