Melbourne will become Australia’s largest city on 7 September 2030, according to data from McCrindle Research.

Currently, Melbourne has about 100,000 fewer residents than Sydney.

Social researcher and demographer Mark McCrindle says Melbourne’s population is growing faster than Sydney’s because it has two things Sydney doesn’t.

“Firstly, affordability — House prices, as steep as they are in Melbourne, are significantly below Sydney’s,” he told Ross and Russel.

“Secondly, livability — For seven of the prior 10 years of this decade, we had Melbourne as the world’s most livable city.”
