Tom Elliott says he cannot understand why the Andrews’ government has introduced legislation to relax the state’s bail laws, which were tightened after the Bourke Street massacre in 2017.

The Greens support it.

“I hoped this day wouldn’t come,” Tom Elliott said on Tuesday.

But Dr Tim Read from the Greens, who is the Member for Brunswick, told 3AW Drive the changes had “unintended” consequences that needed to be addressed.

“What resulted is that for most of the last five years, we’ve had up around 40 or more per cent of prisoners in Victorian prisons there without having been found guilty, convicted, or sentenced,” he said.
