The ‘disgraceful’ tipping trick that’s emerged

3aw afternoons

Consumer advocates have blasted restaurants over a “disgraceful” tipping trick that’s emerged since COVID.

Customers using QR code ordering systems are being prompted to leave a tip, and in some cases it is the default setting.

Adam Glezer from Consumer Champion said it was a service charge, not tip.

“If you’re being asked for it before receiving the meal, and a lot of the time you’re not actually dealing with the waiter or waitress – they’re just bringing the food out to you after you’ve ordered it on the QR code,” he said on 3AW.

“Under no circumstances should you be asking for a tip prior to providing the service.

“That, to me, is just ridiculous.”
