The “disgusting” tram incident that left Tom Elliott questioning our society

A “disgusting” exchange between a woman and man on a crowded tram has left Tom Elliott with little wonder as to why Melbourne is no longer the world’s most liveable city.

Melbourne recently lost its long-running title to Vienna.

The 3AW Drive host was on his way into work on Thursday when he heard raised voices from a “fairly scruffy” looking man and woman wearing a headscarf.

“I don’t know who started it, but pretty soon I heard the man say “you ****ing Muslim a couple of times” and my ears pricked up,” Tom explained.

“She then responded by saying – “you’re an ****ing convict” and then the c-word and told him to “get the **** off and go and get your drugs” and used the c-word again.

“And then he made another comment and it just went back and forth, back and forth.”

Tom said other people on the tram called for calm before the man got off at the next stop.

“But where do we get off where on a crowded tram, full of people, two people just decide they don’t like the look of each other and it’s you effing this and effing that,” Tom asked.

“It’s no wonder, in my mind, that Melbourne is no longer the world’s most liveable city.

“It’s unacceptable.

“It was disgusting.”
