A new drug called donanemab has been hailed as a “tremendous breakthrough” in the fight against Alzheimer’s.

Associate Professor from Austin Health and honorary medical advisor for Dementia Australia, Dr Michael Woodward, has called the drug “the end of the beginning” for research on Alzheimer’s and dementia treatment.

“It’s a remarkable finding,” Dr Woodward told Ross and Russel.

Head of Clinical Services at the Dementia Centre, Associate Professor Stephen Macfarlane, shed light on the results of the trials and outlined what needs to be done to capitalise on the groundbreaking new drug.

“We need to be catching people with worrying memory symptoms early, and potentially treating them with these drugs because they’ll do much better than if they’re left to develop more advanced disease,” Professor Macfarlane told Neil Mitchell.
