Australia’s World Cup campaign came to a grinding halt in Russia this morning.

Peru inflicted a 2-0 defeat in the Socceroos’ last group match, meaning we went without a win from our three games.

It was Peru’s first World Cup match victory in 40 years.

Regardless, the result wouldn’t have mattered given Denmark held France to a 0-0 draw.

Those two teams go through to the next round, whereas Australia finishes on the bottom of the Group C table.

Manager Bert van Marwijk’s told SBS his side was still the better of the two teams this morning, despite the loss.

“We don’t have luck in all three games,” he said.

A World Cup hero of previous years, Tim Cahill (pictured above) was eventually unleashed for the first time this World Cup but unable to make a mark.
