There’s an “extraordinary” statistic which caught Tom Elliott’s attention this morning, which he thinks explains the current youth crime crisis in Victoria.

It came from the annual report from the Department of Justice and Community Safety.

“If you wonder why so few young offenders, even those found guilty of serious crimes, don’t actually get sent to jail, this is the reason right here,” the 3AW Mornings host said.

Senior lecturer in youth work and youth studies at RMIT University, Dr Kathryn Daley, was then questioned by Tom Elliott on community service and how the criminal justice system works.

“I think targets in criminal justice is precarious for a number of reasons,” Dr Daley said.
