Vegemite should be declared Australia’s national dish, according to 27 per cent of people surveyed in YouGov poll.

The yeast extract spread just beat the meat pie, which secured 26 per cent of the vote, and the lamb roast at 21 per cent.

Author of  ‘A Timeline of Australian Food’, Jan O’Connell, says Vegemite “ticks all the boxes”.

“It was invented here, it’s in most Australian households and it’s hard to find anywhere else,” she told Ross and Russel.

But for many years the iconic spread wasn’t Australian owned.

“It was only when Bega Cheese brought Vegemite recently that it returned to Australian hands. It hadn’t been fully Australian since about the 1930s,” she said.
